隨著科技日新月異,個人意見的表達變得更加容易方便。然而,近期台灣發生的數起關於族群、性別、少數群體的爭議與討論,突顯了在加強同理心和人文素養的迫切需求。建立一個能使來自不同背景的個體都感覺被包容和尊重的環境,是十分重要的。

我們非常榮幸邀請到哈佛大學Evelynn Hammonds院長,分享如何「建立公平包容的高等教育機構」。作為哈佛大學第一位擔任哈佛學院 (Harvard College) 院長的非裔女性,也是少數獲得哈佛大學文理學院 (Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences) 終身教職的黑人女性之一,她為美國的高等教育做出開創性的貢獻。

這是她本次訪台期間唯一一場公開演講,並將與政治大學的院長們對談。活動參與者也歡迎在Q&A時段進行提問與討論。

Evelynn Hammonds教授曾經擔任哈佛大學歷史科學系主任 (2017-2022),目前是該校哈欽斯非洲和非裔美國人研究中心 (Hutchins Center for African and African American Research) 「科學與醫學中的種族與性別計畫」 (Project on Race & Gender in Science & Medicine) 主持人。她在2008年成為哈佛學院 (Harvard College) 第一位非裔女性院長,是哈佛大學文理學院 (Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences) 第六位獲得終身教職的黑人女性。在此之前,她也曾擔任哈佛大學教師發展和多元化的首任高級副教務長。

Evelynn Hammonds教授在學術界擁有豐富的背景:早年研讀物理與電機工程,曾任教於麻省理工學院 (MIT) ,並曾在與科學、教育和多元化相關的各種諮詢委員會和中任職。她特別關注科學與醫藥領域中的女性與族群議題,及其交織影響,對更多元、包容的科學與教育環境卓有貢獻。

As technology continues to advance, expressing opinions seems to be more convenient and accessible. However, recent controversies and discussions on topics such as ethnicity, gender, and minorities highlight the urgent need to strengthen empathy and promote humanistic literacy in Taiwan. Creating an inclusive and respectful environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds feel comfortable is crucial.

We are delighted to invite Professor Evelynn Hammonds, a trailblazing academic who has made significant contributions to higher education, to share her insights on “Building Equity into Higher Education Institutions.” Professor Hammonds, as the first African American woman to serve as the Dean of Harvard College and one of the few black women to achieve tenure at Harvard University, brings a unique perspective to the conversation. This will be her only public lecture during her visit to Taiwan. Besides, she will engage in a dialogue with the deans of National Chengchi University. Participants of the lecture are encouraged to ask questions in the Q&A session.

The event will be conducted in English. Box lunch will be provided at the end of the event.

About the speaker:

Professor Evelynn Hammonds served as the Chair of the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University (2017-2022). She is also the Director of the “Project on Race & Gender in Science & Medicine” at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research. In 2008, she became the first African American woman to serve as the Dean of Harvard College and the sixth black woman to receive tenure within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. Before that, she had been the first Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity at Harvard University.

Professor Evelynn Hammonds has a rich background in academia. During her early academic journey, she studied physics and electrical engineering. She has also taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and served on various advisory boards and committees related to science, education, and diversity. She is particularly interested in gender and race/ethnic issues in the fields of science and medicine, and the intersectional influences they have. Her contributions to a more diverse and inclusive environment in science and education are significant.
